Lula’s government pushes for new oil drilling in the Amazon – where it will host COP30

Pressure mounts on Brazil’s environmental agency as the government seeks expedited approval of a controversial oil drilling project
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced more federal investments for COP30 in Belém, PA, Brazil, on February 14, 2025. Inside the São Brás Market, a COP30 project that has already been completed, the president announced an additional R$250 million from BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) to finance macro-drainage and urbanization projects in the capital of Pará. In addition, investments in ports and airports in the state of Pará were highlighted.
